For a man from New Mexico paddle boarding is a way to connect with nature and enjoy the solitary confinement that is paddle boarding in the water where “it is just me, the waves and the water.” This man is named Tony Schaefer and he uses paddle boarding to be alone however when he is out on the water he feels the most connected with is late friend Tony Johnson, also a lover of paddle boarding, his late friend who has passed away from a Glioblastoma, a common very aggressive brain tumor, but Johnson took his diagnosis and decided to raise awareness and charity for the research.
He raised a whopping half of a million dollars but this was just half of his one-million-dollar goal was to raise for the research. Sadly, Johnson was unable to raise the one-million dollars before he was to pass away from his diagnosis. However, his passing has not stopped Schaefer as well as Johnson’s wife and daughter from continuing to raise the money and awareness about Glioblastoma. Because the community in New Mexico where they lived was so gracious there is a fundraiser that is being put together that is going to honor the late tony Johnson and paddle boarding is going to be apart of the fundraiser to raise the money that Johnson had dreamed of reaching.
They plan to paddle along the coast and hope that other paddlers will join them. If you wish to monitor their progress as they plan for this incredible ride to raise awareness and money for the research in Glioblastoma you can visit their Facebook page by clicking here. You may also visit the donation page of the university of Calgary where they are doing most of the research in the biology of the most common and aggressive forms of brains tumors. You can donate Here.
