Where did paddle boarding come from?
Paddle boarding came from a man who was just trying to get a better view of the waves. Seems normal but little did Duke Kanahamoku know he would be creating a whole new sport. Yes, in Hawaii during the 1940’s Duke decided that he wanted a better view of his fellow surfers and the beautiful waves. So, he stands up on some boards and that was when Stand Up Paddle Boarding was born. Amazing! Right?
What do you need to SUP board?
We’ll all you really need is a board an oar and yourself, however safety should be your number one priority so you are going to need a few more items to bring with you every time you get on the water with your board. You should always wear a life vest/jacket this is going to be crucial as for your safety. Does not matter what skill you have as a swimmer everybody should wear one. Another thing you should bring is a leash. This will keep you connect to your board if you fall off. You can easily grab the leash and get back on your paddle board.
What makes it different from surfboarding?
Some may say paddle boarding are completely similar or completely different. Surf boards have less volume than paddle boards. This is because when you are on your SUP board you need the more volume board so that you have enough buoyancy to be able to keep yourself on the board. You also are going to need an oar always to move around on the board. Surfing does not require you to have an oar. You can even surf on your paddle board.
